Travel photography requires the integration of a wide range of skills and knowledge. Our teaching programmes and itineraries are designed to integrate the technical skills and practical knowledge essential for capturing striking travel images. It is the integration of skills and knowledge that distinguishes GeckoWorkshops from other photography courses. On our courses, students learn not only how to operate a camera: they learn to become immersed in their surroundings and anticipate the moment, whilst remaining in full command of the technical skills needed to capture it.

All of our courses take place in India and are intended to equip participants with an understanding of this vast and complex country. A kaleidoscope of races and religions, the subcontinent offers unparalleled photographic opportunities. The largest democracy in the world is also home to some of the most stunning locations in the world, and all our destinations offer a wealth of photographic opportunities in subjects as diverse as landscape, architecture, and environmental portraiture.

The aim of our courses, however, is not simply to take you to the best places at the best times, but to allow you to experience first hand the decision-making processes that support the creation of outstanding travel images. In the company of experienced professional photographers, you will learn how to make the best of any real life photographic situation and produce images of a consistently high quality.

At GeckoWorkshops, we consider the land inseparable from its people; this is why our courses are not limited to landscape or wildlife photography but include instruction on how to photograph people in a variety of situations. Interaction techniques are an integral part of all our courses and we pride ourselves in being able to offer specialised tuition in photographing the rituals and customs of this incredibly diverse land.

The different courses offered share a philosophy that balances theoretical instruction by experienced travel photographers with an intense exploration of the medium through practical, hands-on work, workshops and assignments. In all of our courses instruction takes place in situ and within small groups. In addition, whenever possible, our journeys are timed to coincide with events, fairs and festivities which lend themselves to complex photographic exploration.

Year Out Courses

GeckoWorkshops Year Out courses offer a comprehensive introduction to travel photography through an intensive programme of workshops, theory classes and seminars. The goal of Year Out courses is to afford young people an opportunity to explore the key aspects of travel photography; they are designed to provide practical, hands-on experience in a range of diverse environments and are ideal for anyone who might be considering a career in travel photography. Year Out courses are suitable for those who are new to photography as well as individuals who are moderately familiar with the medium but want to gain in confidence and experience.

 

Expeditions

GeckoWorkshops Expeditions are tailored for those who wish to expand their subject range and refine their photographic skills. Expeditions are suitable for individuals who are already accustomed to taking photographs and are comfortable with their equipment. As the goal of Expeditions is to produce a complete photographic story, emphasis is put on learning to assemble strong coverage of a particular subject. The schedule of each Expedition is similar to that of a travel assignment and consequently, quite demanding. As with all our courses, Expeditions’ destinations have been chosen for their rich photographic potential.

 

Tours

GeckoWorkshops photography Tours offer the chance to learn photography at a leisurely pace whilst travelling in luxury, through a range of stunning locations. Tours are ideal for anyone whishing to learn how to add a professional touch to their photographs. As the goal of Tours is to utilise photography as a means of exploring aspects of the local culture and environment, in these itineraries photography tuition is offered within a variety of other activities.
